What is a clamp made of rebar

What is a clamp made of rebar, how to make it and what forms of clamps exist

The correct creation of a metal frame during the construction of reinforced concrete structures is one of the most important stages in construction. It is the metal frame that gives the reinforced concrete structure high strength, reduces the amount of concrete when pouring, thereby reducing the weight of the entire structure, prevents cracking as a result of stretching the concrete.

In addition to the working rods (fittings), the frame consists of a huge number of auxiliary elements, including clamps made of fittings, which we will talk about in more detail in this article.

What is a rebar clamp?

Rebar clamps are special metal elements that are used in rod structures for transverse fixation of rebar of different layers. Most often they are made of smooth metal rods, bending the edges of the clamps in the form of hooks for reliable fixation. Clamps made of smooth rods are considered more rigid in comparison with clamps made of corrugated rods, since they need additional fixation. Because of this, the ends of the corrugated rods must be connected.

What are rebar clamps for?

Reinforcing clamps perform a number of the following functions:

  • create supports for the working rods during the assembly of the frame
  • prevent deformation and displacement of the reinforcement during pouring
  • prevent the formation of diagonal cracks
  • prevent deflection, torsion and other transverse loads.

What are the types of rebar clamps?

Reinforcing clamps can be open, closed and reinforced.

  1. Open clamps are made in the shape of the letter "P". They are used for additional reinforcement of corners, as well as for installation sites of doors, windows, and other most loaded parts of the reinforced concrete structure.;
  2. Closed reinforcement clamps are made in the form of a frame and are the most common type among these products. They withstand transverse loads of different directions.
  3. Reinforced clamps are designed for torsional loads, so they are also called wound clamps. They are used in places with torsional loads. Also, thanks to reinforced clamps, the reinforced concrete structure turns out to be more earthquake-resistant.

What is the diameter of the rebar clamps?

The diameter of the reinforcing clamp should not be lower than 6 mm and higher than 12 mm.

How to bend the clamps for the foundation?

In order to bend a large number of reinforcement clamps quickly, smoothly and easily, special keys are used for bending the reinforcement. Afacan is considered to be a good manufacturer of both manual and electric tools for bending and cutting rebar, which has been producing its products for more than 50 years and is known for high quality tools and affordable prices.

It is recommended to pay attention to the manual rebar bending machine Afacan 10EB to create smooth bending angles and Afacan 10E to create sharp bending angles of the rebar. They are designed for bending steel rods with a diameter from 6 mm to 10 mm. The machines are made of high-quality alloy steel and coated with a special powder paint. With Afacan hand tools, it is very convenient to work with reinforcement clamps and not only, since if necessary, they are very easy to install and dismantle, and also do not require connection to electricity.  The main thing is to work on a flat horizontal surface.
